Marie Porterfield is a very small being currently living on a giant spinning orb upon which she explores her environment, her imagination, and the beyond. Additionally, she creates large-scale narrative oil paintings, miniature drawings, mixed-media constructions, and intaglio prints. Before Marie was born, her mother prayed that her child would be graced with large eyes. Marie attributes this mysterious prayer to the origin of her innate artistic aspirations. She is a stranger to this world and is thankful to have been saved many times. Marie grew up in a village called Jonesville, Virginia where she lived a glorious childhood in her imagination. During these early years, she spent countless hours playing in the grass beside the dryer vent, eating buttercup flowers and waiting for the fireflies. Marie moved to Tennessee in 2004 to study art at East Tennessee State University where she received a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting. During these years, she spent most of her spare time swimming in lakes, climbing through the mountains, and enjoying breathing. In 2008, Marie relocated to Athens, Georgia where she is a Painting & Drawing Graduate Candidate for an MFA in Studio Art at the University of Georgia. Additionally, she has a graduate research assistantship working for Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE, ice.uga.edu), an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts at the University of Georgia. In the future, Marie hopes to continue exploring the world and going on adventures. |
