Ink and Acrylic on Panel
48″ x 32″
2019 – 2024

Home is a healed work of art that took seven years to paint, with the finished painting existing as a compilation of at least three separate works of art, painted consecutively, one over the other, on the same panel. Moments of earlier iterations emerge through the layers, the pale pink under scratched scribbles in the upper left corner, the sea snake emerging and then disappearing into abstract bits of atmosphere where two black cats now float in the lower half. If this painting is a body, many scars mar the surface. On the top layer is the passionflower, a symbol in my recent work of home and healing. During a deeply painful moment in my past, I bought a small packet of passionflower seeds to grow and struggled to make them sprout. Over many weeks, I tended them to no avail, finally noticing a single sprout emerging. Over the years, that single seed grew into a strong vine with many shoots. In Home, the three stigma of the flower have tiny eyes, connecting the passionflower to person, and referencing the resilience and healing that builds home.
