The Escape began as part of a series of paintings exploring themes of domestic and intimate-partner violence with the standing figure fleeing an undulating sea in which floats several faces. In the process of healing the work, I painted the cat face over the original, once fully human, face of the figure. The white cat with pink ears and a fluffy neck ruff seems strangely unsettling when placed on the body of a figure traveling through such a dark and haunting space. The upright figure is transformed into determined stray as they flee the scene and move toward a new future.
